5 Common Winter Roof Problems and How to Avoid Them

Winter storms wreak havoc on even the most well-prepared homes. Snow, wind, and ice don’t care if your roof is 20 years old or if you just replaced it last year. No matter the condition of your roof, here are some common winter roof problems and how you can avoid them.

Ice Damming

This lovely phenomenon happens when heat from your attic causes snow to melt on your roof. The water from melting snow runs down the roof and refreezes. A slab of ice forms along the eaves where it can weigh down gutters, displace shingles, or even trap water and cause a backup in your attic.

You can help prevent ice damming by ensuring your attic is properly insulated, has ample ventilation, and free airflow.

Icicles

While they are beautiful to look at, your house is no place for icicles. Not only are they a possible sign of ice damming, but they’re also damaging and hazardous, too.

Icicles can weigh down and damage your gutters. Falling icicles may even be dangerous for pets and people alike.

Help prevent icicles from forming by having regular maintenance performed on your gutters and cleaning them out before winter. If icicles do form, carefully knock them down.

Accumulating Snow

Deep snow piling on your roof can cause damage from weight or melting. The weight of snow may cause a sagging rood, or can even lead to collapse.

To prevent this, make sure snow is not accumulating or pooling in low, weak spots on your roof. Be ready to remove with a snow rake if necessary.

Condensation

Condensation forms in your attic and ducts when they are not properly ventilated. This condensation often leads to mildew and mold growth.

Make sure the vents in your roof are not obstructed, either on the interior or exterior to avoid this. If vents are clear and you’re still having this problem, you should consult with a professional to make sure you have the correct number of vents for your space.

Flashing Leaks

Flashing refers to the metal pieces that keep water away from the intersections of all your roof elements. Flashings are sealed with caulk, which can break down over time. When this happens, water seeps in. In winter, this is especially bad. The water freezes and expands, making any small crevices grow larger over time.

Check your flashing for leaks regularly and be ready to caulk when necessary.
