How to Inspect Your Chimney for Spring

At North Shore roofing, we believe your chimney is an important piece of your home and should be cared for accordingly. Most people do not realize that your chimney can take varying degrees of damage during the winter months, and there are steps to take to both avoid this and upkeep your chimney for the spring season. Below are a few ways you can inspect your chimney to make sure it is in the best shape it can be for spring months.

Be Prepared

When you go to inspect your chimney, it is important that you are prepared for what you may find and have a plan for if you do find any issues. Often times small animals can crawl into your chimney for warmth, only to find they cannot always get out when they need to. This, as well as other types of damage caused by weather and aging, can cause some pretty unsightly issues with your chimney that need to be addressed.

Protect Yourself

Protection, protection, protection! I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep yourself protected while doing self-diagnosis of the state of your roof in any manner. Be sure that if you are going to inspect your chimney, you wear protective gear such as goggles and gloves, and keep yourself secured so that you do not get hurt.

Know What to Look For

Knowing what to keep an eye out for is half of the work when it comes to chimney inspection. When you look down into your chimney, you will want to look for anything that could be blocking view from the bottom of the chimney. This can give you a good idea of the type of interior blockage or damage you could be facing. Aside from blockage, keep an eye on your bricks, metal, or other materials, to make sure there are no parts missing or warped from the winter weather. You will want to inspect your chimney from all angles, making sure that no parts are left unchecked for the best outcome.

It is important to note that even when you identify a blockage or other issue in your chimney, it is often best to leave chimney repair to the professionals.  Many people chose to have regular chimney maintenance that can easily take care of the issues above, while you can rest at ease knowing you, and your home, are in good hands.
