7 Signs Your Roof Needs a Repair

It’s winter and the temperature has dropped. Are you noticing a draft in your home, even when the heat is on full blast?

Your roof could be the culprit. If you’re scratching your head trying to figure out if a roof repair is necessary, here are five signs to look for.

Shingles: Are they curled, cracked, or just plain missing?

Take a good look at those shingles. If you see more than just a couple curling up at the edges, cracking or crumbling into pieces, or just missing altogether, it’s time for a repair or replacement.

Take a Peek in Those Gutters (and clean ‘em out while you’re at it)

Debris from leaves, trees, and animals is normal. What’s not normal? A bunch of tiny pieces of shingles, or debris that looks like little black granules. If you see a lot of shingle debris, you’ve got a problem that needs to be addressed.

Check Around the Openings on Your Roof

Inspect the area around vents, chimneys, and skylights. Do those spots look different or deteriorated when compared to the areas around them. If so, you might need some repairs confined to these places. These can be small fixes now, but if left untreated can lead to bigger problems.

Water Stains or Spots on Ceiling and Walls

Never ignore signs of moisture on your walls or ceilings. These are sure signs of a roof leak or ventilation issue.

Surprisingly High Energy Bills

If you’ve been in your home for a while, you have a good idea of the average winter energy bill. If your bill causes your eyes to pop out a little, take a look at your roof. Poor insulation or leaks can allow heat to escape, leading to your heating system working overtime.

Unexpected Light in the Attic

When you go up to drag out the decorations or put them back after the holiday, take a look around the attic. If you’re seeing light in unexpected places, it’s time to call in the pros.

A Sagging Roof

If you see snow or water settling in a specific spot on your roof, don’t ignore it. A sagging spot can be repaired, but if left alone can lead to an even bigger problem with the entire roof.

Fix the Little Problems Before they Become the Big Problem

Don’t ignore any of these signs. While a couple of curling shingles or a small water spot on the ceiling may not seem like a dire situation, winter weather conditions can take a small problem and turn it into a big one.
