We in the business know there is some seriously misleading misconceptions out there regarding roofing and roofs in general. Here we have compiled a list of the 8 most common roofing misconceptions we see out there:
- Dark Colored Shingles Will Result in Higher Energy Bills
People believe that dark colored shingles will result in higher energy bills because they attract more heat in the summer. This is false, however, because of your home’s insulation. The insulation in your home acts as a barrier between your roof and the temperature within your house. Making the statement that dark shingles will result in higher energy bills not necessarily true.
- A Roof Does Not Need to be Replaced Unless It Leaks
Many people believe that unless your roof is leaking, there is no reason to replace it. This is not always the case! Your roof may not be visibly leaking for problems to be occurring under the surface. There are plenty of other ways in which you can attest to the soundness of your roof that do not involve leaks. If someone were to ignore other signs of problems simply because there were no leaks yet, there roof could be in serious trouble when they do get it inspected. This is why routine inspections are so important.
- It is Fine to Install New Shingles Over the Old Ones
Please do not do this. Adding shingles on top of shingles to your roof may sound like a harmless way to save money, but the weight of one tiny shingle can add up over time with small repairs in this way, here and there. This can cause serious issues in your roof and may lead to your roof caving in onto the rest of your house.
- There is No Need to Replace One Missing Shingle
While one tiny shingle can seem like no big deal, it effects every shingle around it and can lead to water from inclement weather being able to penetrate your roof. If one shingle is missing, do not wait for more to go to get a new one installed in its place. You will save yourself a lot of time and patience by being proactive!
- Green Roofs are Rare!
A lot of people believe Green Roofs are rare because of the newness of the concept of environmentally friendly roofing, however this is not the case. In 2020, the number of green roofs grew exponentially. There is evidence that suggests Green Roofs are only just beginning to spread all across the United States and they are making a huge environmental impact.
